TotalEnergies and Veolia illuminate Oman’s desalination with solar power

TotalEnergies, Veolia, and Sharqiyah Desalination mark Oman's first major solar project, producing green energy to reduce CO2 emissions

TotalEnergies and Veolia, in partnership with Sharqiyah Desalination Company SAOG, celebrated a significant milestone with the official inauguration of a groundbreaking 17 MWp ground-mounted solar project in Sur, Oman.

This event marks a pivotal shift in the region’s approach to sustainable energy solutions.

The newly unveiled solar installation boasts cutting-edge technology, poised to generate more than 30,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean, green electricity each year. This renewable energy source will account for over 30% of the daily power consumption of the desalination plant, significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by a remarkable 210,000 tons throughout the duration of the contract.

What sets this project apart is its status as the first of its kind in Oman, representing one of the largest solar photovoltaic systems ever deployed to power a desalination facility within the country. This initiative is perfectly aligned with Oman’s National Energy Strategy, which aims to transition 30% of its electricity production to renewable sources by the year 2030.

The solar project boasts an impressive array of features, including more than 32,000 high-efficiency solar panels and an innovative East-West tracker system designed to optimize energy production. Spanning a vast area of 130,000 square metres, roughly equivalent to the size of 18 football fields, this project underscores the commitment to harnessing renewable energy for a sustainable future.

This initiative also demonstrates TotalEnergies’ desire of expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The company has set ambitious targets, with plans to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewables and energy storage by 2025, and an even more remarkable 100 GW by the year 2030, as stated in their official statement.
